Reasons Why Summer Tutoring Is Important

Summer is time for fun, family, vacations, camp, relaxation, and TUTORING? With the end of the school year approaching quickly you are probably beginning to think about your family’s summer schedule. Many parents believe that summer is time for a mental break but it is during the summer vacation that many students fall behind because of lack of mental stimulation. Perhaps you are asking yourself if your child will benefit from tutoring during the summer months. Here are a few reasons how your child may benefit from summer tutoring:

  1. Prevents Learning Loss – Students may experience learning loss when not engaged in educational activities over the summer.  Private tutoring will allow your child to review anything that they found difficult throughout the school year.
  2. Prepares Students For ACT & SAT Testing – Test preparation can be overwhelming during the school year. The summer is the perfect time for your child to start preparing for the ACT or SATs.
  3. Provides A Routine – With so much free time during the summer months your child will easily fall out of a routine. Scheduled tutoring sessions, even if it is only one hour per week, will help provide structure and a routine.
  4. Previews Next Year’s Material – Summer tutoring will not only help your child maintain what was learned during the previous year it will also help prepare for the upcoming school year.  Why not get a head start!
  5. Builds Confidence – The summer is the perfect time for your child to work on anything that they found challenging or may of caused anxiety during the school year.

Will A Private Math Tutor Help?

Transitioning from elementary math to middle school math or from middle school math to high school math is challenging for many students.  Many times the curriculum is taught differently then how it was taught in the past  so it is common for parents to search for some level of academic assistance for their children.  Whether you would like your child to get better grades or if you would just like to try to make academic life easier private tutoring is always a good option.

Whether it be Elementary Level Math, Algebra, Geometry or AP Level Math Courses private tutoring is a great option that has proven to be beneficial for many reasons.  Here are just a few:

  • Personalized Attention – Students can easily loose focus and become frustrated when it comes to learning new things especially when the new curriculum is challenging. Private tutoring provides the student with extra time and one on one attention outside of the classroom so that all aspects of the lesson can be covered at a pace that the student is comfortable with.
  • Reduce Stress & Anxiety – Many times private tutors will give assignments or review problems that are similar to the quizzes or exams the student will get in class.  These pre-test tests are helpful because they will psychologically prepare the student and take away some of the exam pressure that they may be experiencing.
  • Time Management & Support – Tutors will make sure your child has all the support and help he needed to understand the curriculum so that the next test is a success. In addition a private tutor will work with the student on their time management and studying skills.

The math your child is learning in school may be challenging, even for us adults, as teaching methods have changed over the years.  Are your ready to get started?  A+ Tutoring Service will design a custom tutoring plan to fit your child’s learning ability. When To Start Studying For The SAT

When should I start studying for the SAT? This is a very common question however there is no “clear-cut” answer. In many ways the SAT is a test of knowledge and much of it covers content that you have learned learned throughout your academic career specifically grammar rules, essay writing tips, Geometry and Algebra skills.  Therefore studying should include brushing up on all of these skills, becoming familiar with the types of questions that will be on the SAT and learning test taking strategies.

For the purpose of this blog post we are going to base our advice on age and not goal.  Age is typically the easiest marker of when you should start your SAT prep.

The Underclassman

It is recommended that you start to study for the SAT the summer before your junior year in high school. As an underclassman you have plenty of time to prepare so there is no need to worry about cramming it all in. Also, you may opt to take the SAT early in the school year which will allow you to concentrate primarily on your classes going forward.

Some students opt to begin their SAT prep during the summer before sophomore year. Taking the PSAT is a great way to get an idea as to where you are and how much you will have to improve.  Advanced preparation is ideal but it is not always better. Starting to early result in loosing motivation over time.

Junior Year

Many students opt to take the summer off and start their SAT prep during junior year.  Junior year tends to be a stressful year so keeping up with classes and preparing for the SAT may be a lot for some.  However, if you are dedicated and manage your schedule properly this method will work fine.  It is a good idea to dedicate a little time each school night for SAT review and be prepared to allocate more time on weekends and days off for more intense SAT prep.

Senior Year

If you haven’t taken the SAT by the end of junior year it would be smart to begin studying immediately. It is typically ideal to have taken the SAT or have been studying by now since the summer before your final year in high school can be very hectic.  In most cases we recommend not to leave too much SAT prep for your first semester of senior year.  Yes waiting this long to study is possible but SAT review and testing, college applications and your normal workload can be extremely time consuming and stressful for any student.

Taking that into consideration age is not the only factor to take into consideration when trying to determine a good time to start your SAT prep.  Some argue that the goal is a more important gauge and we will be covering this in our next post.

At A+ Tutoring Service, we offer test prep for SAT II, GED, GMAT, GRE, TOEFL, Armed Services Aptitude Test and others. Our highly experienced, friendly tutors are here to help you or your student succeed; no matter where you are hoping to go. To get started with your test prep tutoring plan, contact A+ Tutoring Service at 732-566-6086 or contact us online with your questions.
